13:57I hope everyone can see the screen from here. Now, you might be surprised that although David became my brother-in-law, I actually knew him before Esther did. I first met him in year 1969.
14:23I was in high school and involved in a youth group of a local church, and we heard that there was a student in the Bible [inaudible] who was a freedom swimmer, and he took the risk of swimming across the water from Mainland China to Hong Kong. So we made an appointment to meet him and to learn about his story. I was impressed, and I have been impressed for the next 57 years.
15:05And today we are gathered here with mixed emotions. Our hearts are heavy because we have lost a spiritual shepherd, a friend or a relative. Yet our spirits are filled with hope, because we know this is not the end of David's story. God in his infinite wisdom has chosen to take David home to be with Christ in paradise.
15:47While David is no longer with us in person [unclear], he has left us many meaningful gifts. You can see some nice pictures, nice paintings by David at the back. He has written many books. I very much cherished the works that he gave me throughout the years. And above all, he left us with the beautiful story of his life, which remains an inspiring example for us all.
16:29Now, if you haven't seen the website that Angell [unclear] developed for David, you don't want to miss it. You don't want to miss it.
16:43And as I think of David's life, I think of the Apostle Paul in the New Testament. And I noticed that there are many similarities between Paul and David, particularly in a letter that Apostle Paul wrote to his student Timothy.
17:12Now, that letter was written just before Paul was executed; he was in [inaudible] at that time. A passage I find very fitting to think about David today. I will read it to you: 2 Timothy 4:7-8.
17:43I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
18:13Let's take a closer look at what Paul says here, that also, I think, applies to David. First, Apostle Paul said, "I have fought the good fight." Now, Paul used the image of a soldier in a battle. He reminds us that ministry is a spiritual battleground.
18:42The good fight means two things. One is that you pick the right opponent. You fight with the right guy. You choose the right target. And secondly, you do well in the fight. Now, David picked the right target. He did not waste time or energy on things that don't last. He picked the target that has the eternal reward. And he also fought well, because he did not give up.
19:23Now, fighting well doesn't mean that you win every battle. It means that you endure and [inaudible], always moving toward that goal. David has shared with me on many occasions, while he ministered at different churches in California, New York, Washington, and Vancouver. And it touched my heart.
19:51I have the deep feeling that being a pastor is not easy. I know there are several pastors right here, or your spouse is a pastor; it's not easy. And you will agree with me, especially if you want to be a faithful servant of the Lord.
20:16Based on my experience, a faithful pastor suffers a lot, suffers for Christ, and our body is marked with scars. And some scars are from fighting wild animals to protect the flock. The rest of the scars are from the sheep.
20:44Finishing the race doesn't mean that pastors will not get tired or will not face doubt. It means that they don't quit. And David did not quit. Through changes in time, health challenges and cultural shift, he kept running. He kept fighting. David fought for the gospel. He fought for the salvation of souls and for the spiritual health of the congregation. And he fought a good fight.
21:28And Apostle Paul said, "I have finished the race." The Christian life, particularly the ministry life of a pastor, is a race. It's a marathon. It's not a 100-meter sprint. Finishing the race means that you work hard [inaudible]. And David kept running until he reached the finish line.
22:08Apostle Paul said, "I have kept the faith." Now, that is the core of a pastor's calling. David had unwavering conviction about the Bible. You can feel that when you read his books, his essays. David got [unclear] the message of Jesus Christ. He preached the Bible with confidence, with love, and he refused to dilute the truth to please the audience.
22:46David was also a living testimony. He did not talk about faith only. He lived it out. He walked his talk.
23:03Apostle Paul, toward the end of his life, in chapter 4 of 2 Timothy, he looked forward to the crown of righteousness.
23:18Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.
23:34Now today, while we mourn the loss of David, we celebrate a magnificent homecoming. The race is run, the battle is won, and David is resting in the presence of the Master. He will receive his crown of righteousness.
24:00But there's more. There's more in this verse. Apostle Paul said that the crown of righteousness will also be given to those who are expecting, who are waiting for Christ's appearance. And they include you and me.
24:20David's work on earth is complete. Mission accomplished. It's now up to you and me to continue with our fight and our run. Let us commit our life to Jesus and find ways to share the good news of Christ with our friends and our neighbors.
24:47Now let's pray together. Heavenly Father, we thank you for David, for his faith, love, and tireless service. I pray that you'll comfort David's family and friends. Help us to pick up the torch he carried so well, so that we'll run our own races with endurance, and to keep the faith until we meet again. In Jesus' name, Amen.
26:04Hello, my name is Angell. I am David's son, and I have the honor and privilege of being his son for the last 46 years. The story of my life begins with the decisions that Dad made in the story of my [inaudible]. And honestly, we don't have the time here in this service to recount his entire life's journey and do justice to his accomplishments.
26:38I think Dad's life could be made into an action-packed, full-length film. So I tried to capture all of that on the website that I created.
27:03Before Dad's Parkinson's and dementia fully took over, I think all of us are so grateful that he took it upon himself to write memoirs on his computer, prior to the disease taking over. And that is the basis for the stories for the website. So I didn't make this stuff up. It was really just all translated onto the website.
27:34So I encourage you all, if you haven't yet, to go to revdavidtsang.com. I actually pushed up some updates yesterday. So if you read it last week, it's newly updated. There's more stuff. So I will continue to be pushing more as more data and information, more stories, more interviews that I have. They will all be added and added and added, hopefully, to the very end.所以,如果你還沒有看過,我鼓勵大家去瀏覽 revdavidtsang.com。
28:07So, I apologize if this is going to go long. It's going to go long, because my dad's life story is super long, and I really tried to cut almost everything out, but it's going to be long, okay? So just settle in, okay?
28:27My dad was a country boy from rural inner southern China. This is very far away from the ocean. After the communist changeover — I encourage you guys to look into what happened there — his logical destiny after the communist changeover was to be a farmer with minimal education, very little potential to reach higher than what was dealt to him in his life.
29:05He was the seventh of ten brothers. Needless to say, one-on-one parental attention and love, which any child wants, desires, and needs, was a scarce commodity.
29:24This was exacerbated by the environment that he was surrounded by. He was born into multiple wars in China: first, the Japanese invasion, the Chinese Civil War. He endured unimaginable trauma of persecution as a doctor's son, and by the Red Guards, which was a form of the new government going on and changing the government in China. It was a terrible time.
30:08You may be learning about this for the first time, and the reason why I made the website is because I think it is very important to understand the rich and tragic history that shaped my dad, his family, many others living in China, millions of people, because only then can you understand how incredible my dad's journey has been, against all odds.
30:37For those of us who were born and grew up here in America, like me, it's hard. I can admit it is hard to relate. It's hard to understand. Again, a lot of the details are on the website.
31:00After you read his life story, you'll realize that Dad was a lot of things. So I'll go through the list. Dad was a forever student. He embodied curiosity and inquisitiveness. He also paired that with hardcore commitment. And then those of you who know my dad, you know he was hardcore.
31:30When something sparked in his mind, he would just dive deep and would not let go. When Sunny and I told him that we wanted to quit piano lessons, he looked at our piano and he said, "Fine. I will learn how to play piano. I will not let this piano go to waste."
31:54And in his early forties, although he had no formal music training, he taught himself basic music theory and composed 11 original hymns. And I finally [unclear] have memories of him singing and playing piano. And also being thankful that he let me quit piano.
32:22He had no formal arts training. Yet he produced countless pieces of beautiful Chinese calligraphy paintings, which you can see. We have some originals in the back. Mostly horses, his favorite animal.
32:42He discovered the joys of making 100% custom, artisanal bedside lamps. Yes, we had like 50 of them in our house, and some of us who were very close to us also have them in our house.
33:04Each one always had — in the '80s they invented a touch sensor, where you screw in the light bulb and then you draw a wire to some metal piece. All of them have that, so that in order to turn on the lamp you have to just touch the lamp. And I bet you, to a countryside China boy, this was absolute magic, right? So he made sure that was on every one.
33:34Dad was a thinker, and he was a writer. He wrote more than a dozen books. Those books are on the website as well. We've shipped them off to a professional book scanner so that I can get official, real e-books, and I'll be putting them on the website so you can download it to your computer. And it's fully, for the first time ever, translated from Chinese to English.
34:05Man, was he a writer. My memories of him: I would wake up in the morning to the typewriter. And if you've never lived through that era, the typewriter is when you do it before the computer, and it would shoot a letter, with ink, and hit the paper, and then when you reach the line break you would hit enter, and the paper would fly to the left, and then it would hit a bell and go right.
34:41So I would wake up to the bell and the clacking, clacking and bell, and then I would go to sleep to clacking and bells. He was non-stop writing.
34:56Dad was a consummate teacher. He had this incredible skill of explaining how things worked using a lot of empathy. He wasn't really a tyrannical, dictator-type teacher. He was a bended-knee type teacher.
35:19He used this style of a combination of Chinese proverb and Jesus parables to teach us. And as kids, well, that's how he taught us too. He'd sit us down, me and Sunny, and lecture us, and we would look at each other and say, "Okay, let's settle in. We've got a whole bunch of analogies coming through."
35:47He'd be like, "God's love is like an elevator, lifting those willing to be served from a low level to a high level. But man's love is like an orange squeezer, because it appears, the orange squeezer appears to love the orange, but it doesn't. It only just squeezes the orange dry to satisfy itself."
36:24I would do something wrong, and I would apologize, disingenuously. And he would be like, "This is like a murderer who stands in court and only admits to the judge that he was impolite to the victim. And that is not the same as confessing."
36:53Dad, he had an enormous capacity to give. He was so generous. When he arrived in Chicago for the very first time, during the day he studied, went to school, and at night he worked as a taxi driver, he worked as a bus driver, he was a janitor, he was a live-in evening caretaker for elderly.
37:22He paid his tuition on time, every single semester, except for the one time he had to use it to buy the engagement ring for my mom. And every month he sent money back to his mother and his brothers in China, while also sending money to seminary students in Hong Kong that he knew needed support. He would continue to do this to the very end of his mother's life.
37:58He would note that he would see other seminary students from China receiving money to use for tuition, and he was doing the opposite: money was outflowing from him as a student. In his memoirs he writes:他曾經提到,他看見其他來自中國的神學生都是收到錢來交學費的,而他卻剛好相反:作為學生,錢是從他那裏流出去的。
38:20Give gladly when one is in need.
38:26Although my dad was prolific in his paintings and lamp making, the libraries of his work I have documented is surely incomplete, because all I have is the files and what we have on hand, because he gave almost everything away. If he made a lamp, he gave it. If he painted a horse, he gave it. The purpose of art for him was not to just admire the art, but to just gift to others.
38:58But his greatest gift was his time and his energy and his passion for others. He had a gift for instantly dropping anything he was doing to help you. I don't know what he called that gift, but it was his gift.
39:17"Yes, my son, what do you need?" That was like, he'd just pop up. He would rush over to Mom when she called. All the countless times counseling and mentoring and teaching pretty much anyone who asked, at a moment's notice. He gave everything of himself to everyone around him.「是,兒子,你需要甚麼?」
39:46Dad was full of life. Some say with married couples, one of them is a golden retriever and the other is a cat, and my dad is the golden retriever. He is the quintessential extrovert. He's guaranteed to strike up a conversation with anyone, and completely fearless in the life [unclear] of social norms.
40:17He loved standing in lines. He loved to queue, because he had a captive audience behind him and in front of him. And in time, Sunny and I learned to see this, and we had to sometimes save people from him, because they got stuck next to him.
40:57But Dad exuded positivity. I don't think he could help it, because when you experience the trauma and pain that he experienced, [inaudible] makes sense. I think he wanted to show people that nothing is impossible. It's perspective.
41:24To Sunny and me, Dad was close to perfect. He was left-handed, so, believe it or not, his left-handed skyhook in basketball in our driveway was unstoppable. He and Sunny shared a love of shopping, and his taste in shoes was impeccable.
41:53But he wasn't absolutely perfect. His penhold backhand in ping pong could use some work. Right-handers, you can exploit it by going real hard on your forehand to his right. That's a tip for my table tennis people, if you play him in heaven.
42:20Dad was not easily impressed with food. We would ask him, "Dad, how do you like the food?" and his answer was almost always, "It's okay." But that also meant he was a really good gauge of when something was truly, truly delicious. Because if he said it was good, then you knew it was really good.
42:47That's a lot of things. But above all things, Rev. Dr. David Tsang was my dad. And what might not come across in his biography and all the history that's on the website—it's just a lot of facts and stuff—is that his love was not shallow. It was as deep as it was wide. He loved my mom, Sunny and me to the depths of his being.
43:20Nothing made him more proud and full of joy than his family, his children, his grandchildren. When he saw one of us, every time, it was like lighting up a firework of happiness on Chinese New Year. An explosion of happiness. Joy, pure joy, at the sight of his family.
43:47Dad was not your typical reserved Asian dad. He made it a point to tell each of us that he loved us, every day, multiple times a day. We were showered with hugs and kisses.
44:05If you know my mom and Sunny, they do not really like hugs and kisses. They are the cats. But I think they learned to love it, love it from Dad [unclear]. I'm not sure what the psychology is behind this, but I'd like to think that he was making up for his childhood.
44:36I know I'm getting long, but I'd like to finish with probably the largest challenge and most dramatic story in his life. When Dad was 23, in China, he saw the Red Guards take over his church, and he prayed to God, "If you help me leave China and get to Hong Kong, then my life is yours and I will work for you."
45:01And at that time people were assigned to a city or village, and if you were found in the wrong place, you're going to be imprisoned or executed. If you tried to leave China, you would be imprisoned or executed.
45:15So in order to escape, he planned to swim eight hours to Hong Kong, but they're inland, so he has to get to the ocean first. And so it was three days of dangerous, perilous travel through the bush, because you couldn't travel by the road.
45:34And unfortunately, in his first attempt, he was caught by the guards and immediately placed in prison, near the ocean. But at that time he was thinking it was a complete failure, and they sent him back to the village, and he was resigned to just stay in China, until one of his friends wanted to escape, and he was like, "Escape with me." And he just kept asking and asking and asking.
46:07Eventually my dad relented. But this time he was extra careful. He made sure that he went swimming every day and practiced swimming miles and miles in the river to be prepared. And he also studied the stars to figure out how to navigate when you're out in the open water, from the [inaudible].
46:33And he described traveling three days through the bush as not walking but crawling on his hands and knees, only in the middle of the night. During the day they would hide under the bushes and stay [inaudible] until it turned dark again. They had no tools, and it was bush, so they physically tore bushes apart with their hands. Most bushes were thorny, so by the end of it they were just all bloodied up [unclear].
47:09And when they finally reached the water, you can't just swim. They were careful to enter with no noise. The way you had to swim was sort of like a horse, like treading water without bringing any of your limbs above the water, because you don't want white splashing. And he had some belongings, so you had to tie the belongings to the top of his head. And slowly and quietly they made it from China to Hong Kong.
47:42There were guards on the lookout on both the Chinese side and the Hong Kong side. They were ordered to shoot on sight, so it was not uncommon to see bodies of failed freedom swimmers floating in the water.
48:02And when they eventually reached the shoreline of Hong Kong, the entire shoreline was fenced off with wire fencing. And so they had to seek a way to get on, and they found a little hole. And eventually they did, and they knew it was Hong Kong when they saw a sign that was in English.
48:23So then he went to the first house he saw and knocked on the door, a random house, and the person didn't open the door and asked, "Who are you?" and refused to let them in because they were strangers. Then my dad thought of the most well-known person from his village and said, "Do you know Dr. Tsang Kong Kow [unclear]?" And miraculously this person was from the exact same village, opened the door, and that was the first step to my dad's freedom and a new life.
49:03Dad was born in 1943, the year of the Water Horse, according to the Chinese [unclear], which I think is fitting. He swam like a horse in water for freedom here on earth.
49:25Dad passed away last Friday, in the year of the Fire Horse, 2026. I wonder if he did that on purpose. I'd like to think he was taken up to God like Elijah, who was taken up in a chariot of fire and horses of fire, for freedom and eternity.
49:57But I think this time, when Dad arrived, there was no barbed wire to welcome him. This time, when he knocked on the door, Grandpa and Grandma and his brothers opened the door, and they must have said, "Welcome home. We've been waiting for you."
