Hymns

All Depends on the Lord’s Resurrection

Rev. Dr. David Tsang

Three verses tracing the resurrection through: it broke the walls of the grave, he ascended to the Father’s right hand where he prays for his people without ceasing, and the whole debt was paid off in our stead.

4/4 · Words and music by David Tsang · 1985

The verses and the closing couplet are read in full. The refrain beyond its opening 哈利路亞 is not yet transcribed; the score above carries it.

One

The Saviour’s rising defeated death and broke through the walls of the grave;
from then on his people have eternal life.

Two

The Saviour rose and ascended, and sits at the right hand of the Father,
where he prays for his people without ceasing.

Three

The Saviour’s rising is the gospel: the whole debt paid off in our stead,
and grace and peace besides.

Closing lines

Blessed by God without measure; heaven and man joined in love;
freely received, through faith.
(Refrain) Hallelujah …

Read at higher magnification the closing couplet resolves: all three lines run to seven characters, and the reading is 白白得著因信心 — a doubled 白白, not 父. 白白得著, “received without paying for it,” is the ordinary Chinese of Romans 3:24, and it answers 償債全部代還清 in the third verse. The refrain past 哈利路亞 is not yet read.
