The Rationale of Spiritual Growth — the author’s own printed English title. Three parts of five four-character topics each, none running past two typed pages, because he keeps the habit he describes in the closing word of being “sparing of words as of gold.” On the back cover he explains 情理 as a single word joining “love” and “truth”: spiritual growth, he writes, has nothing to do with position or academic degrees, but with understanding the word and with suffering.
《靈命成長之情理》——封面印有作者自訂的英文書名 The Rationale of Spiritual Growth。全書三篇，每篇五題，題皆四字，每題不逾打字紙兩頁；他在後語中自述有「吝字如金」之習。封底說明「情理」是「愛情」與「真理」之統稱；他寫道，靈命成長與「地位」和「學位」無關，卻與「明道」和「受苦」有關。
The book ends with ten classical lyric tunes — “Song of Divination,” “The River All Red,” “Prelude to Water Melody” and the rest — refilled with Christian words. He sets out his reason first: the lyrics of the ancients hold far more sorrow than joy, and Li Qingzhao, Qin Guan and Li the Later Ruler had no way, as Daniel and Paul had, to put thanksgiving in the place of despair. One of the ten hides an acrostic in the first character of each line.
書末以「古詞新填」十闋作結——卜算子、滿江紅、水調歌頭等，皆以基督信仰之詞填古調。他先說明其故：古人之詞悲多歡少，李清照、秦觀、李後主皆無法如但以理、保羅一般，以感恩讚美取代悲愁。十闋之中，有一闋以每句首字藏頭。
「後得主所示，筆者將『靈命成長之奧秘』中之『奧秘』，改為『情理』。『筆者』聽從『作者』，實合情理。」“Afterwards, being shown by the Lord, the writer changed 奧秘 in 靈命成長之奧秘 to 情理. That the ‘writer’ should listen to the ‘Author’ is only reasonable.” The closing word.
Source and editions原稿與版本
The Chinese is his own manuscript, held in the family archive under the filename 靈命成長之奧秘.doc. Its own first line reads 靈命成長之情理, and the closing word explains why: he changed the title himself. The two titles are one book, not two.
中文為家中檔案所存之原稿，檔名作「靈命成長之奧秘.doc」，然原稿首行作《靈命成長之情理》；後語中他自述其故：書名乃他自己所改。兩名實為一書，非二書。
Translated from the Chinese in September 2026. His scripture references are printed as he wrote them, except in twelve places where the reference as printed cannot be the passage he quotes — among them John 14:34 and John 14:35, in a chapter of thirty-one verses. There the English gives the passage and says in brackets what the source prints.
二〇二六年九月由中文譯出。書中經文出處一概按他所寫保留，惟十二處所印之出處與所引經文不符——如約14:34、約14:35，而該章僅三十一節——英譯則列出所引經文，並於方括號內註明原稿所印。
