Crossing Five Passes and Slaying Six Generals / What Pilgrims Must Know過五關斬六將/天路客須知

Rev. Dr. David Tsang曾大衛博士牧師

Date on original cover: 2015原封面日期:2015

Written in 2014, out of what he calls forty years of refining on the gospel field and sixty years of reading Scripture. He takes Guan Yu’s ride through five passes from Romance of the Three Kingdoms as the figure for the heavenly road: five passes to cross — believing the revelation, being truthful with God, a real faith, choosing the living way, being fit for the kingdom — and six generals to slay: the devil, the world, the flesh, custom, superstition and ignorance.

二〇一四年之作,他自言出於福音工場四十年之磨煉、讀經靈修六十年之心得。借《三國演義》關雲長過五關之事喻天路:五關當過——相信啟示、對神誠實、真實信心、願選活路、配進神國;六將當斬——魔鬼、世界、肉身、文化、迷信、無知。

The fifth general, superstition, is where he is sharpest. He names three beliefs he holds to be false: that a believer will meet no hardship, that God appoints anyone to destruction, and that a believer may call himself a priest — and argues each from the Hebrew and the Greek. On the first he sets Churchill beside the preachers: Churchill called Britain to fight Hitler with “blood and sweat,” not with a promise of no hardship.

第五將「迷信」一節言辭最厲。他列出三種他認為的迷信:信徒可不遭患難、神預定人滅亡、信徒可自稱祭司,並逐一據希伯來文與希臘文駁之。論第一者,他以邱吉爾相較:邱吉爾召英人抗希特勒,所許者乃「血與汗」,非「不遭患難」。

「少年跟主到集美,學道從不累。壯年跟主去美地,經歷愛海靈風送恩雨。如今跟主來溫市,作福音大使。」
“In my youth I followed the Lord to Jimei, and was never weary of learning the Way. In my prime I followed the Lord to America, and knew a sea of love where the wind of the Spirit sent grace like rain. Now I follow the Lord to Vancouver, to be an ambassador of the gospel.” The closing lyric.
Source and editions原稿與版本

The family archive holds three manuscript versions, DT-0276, DT-0277 and DT-0278, under the titles 天路客須知 and 過五關斬六將. The main reading edition follows DT-0276. Differing passages from the other two versions appear in the variant appendices. DT-0278 includes the note “希伯來字左右倒調寫”; the manuscripts differ in some Hebrew letter sequences and Greek forms. Each version’s surviving characters are retained as supplied.

家人檔案存此稿三個版本:DT-0276、DT-0277 及 DT-0278,書名有《天路客須知》及《過五關斬六將》。主閱讀版以 DT-0276 為底本,其餘兩稿的不同文字另收入異稿補篇。DT-0278 寫有「希伯來字左右倒調寫」的註記;各稿有些希伯來文字序及希臘文字形不同,均按各稿保存的字元照錄。

The closing lyric traces his own life in three lines — Jimei as a youth, America in his prime, Vancouver now — and the phrase “grace like rain” is 恩雨, the name of the church he founded in California.

末詞三句自述生平——少年集美、壯年美地、如今溫市;句中「恩雨」即他在加州所創建之恩雨堂堂名。

Translated from the Chinese in September 2026 and checked against it section by section: every scripture reference compared, paragraph counts matched. Where he cites a reference that does not match the verse he quotes, his number is printed as he wrote it; one reference lacks a chapter number and the translation says so in place.

二〇二六年九月由中文譯出,並逐節核對:比對全部經文出處,核對段落數目。凡經文出處與所引經句不符者,一概按他所寫保留;其中一處缺章數,譯文於原處註明。

English titles and translated excerpts are provided for readers of this library. The Chinese version preserves the original wording.
