A Thousand Colors Herald the Spring

Rev. Dr. David Tsang

Date on original cover: 2015

His book on church growth, in four parts of five chapters each. The title comes from a line of Zhu Xi — “a thousand purples and reds, and all of it is spring” — which he reads as saying that the flowers open only because the spring wind blows on them: a church grows only where the Spirit works with it.

He is blunt about what he means. “The Lord’s body is a matter of health, not of fatness”; the “thousand purples and reds” are real flowers and not plastic ones. He sets two American churches side by side — one that preached the old-time gospel and grew, one that preached success and went bankrupt — and asks which the reader would build.

“The thousand purples and reds of springtime come from God’s hand. A church’s spiritual growth is truly God’s work.” Afterword.
Source and editions

The Chinese is his own manuscript, held in the family archive. The author note at the front uses the English names of his churches and books as he wrote them himself; see the note on his own English in the other entries. The afterword closes each part with a line of Tang and Song poetry on spring.

Translated from the Chinese in September 2026 and checked against it section by section: every scripture reference compared, paragraph counts matched. Where he cites a reference that does not match the verse he quotes, his number is printed as he wrote it and the translation says so in place — three references in this book.
